War changes not only the life of someone who has experienced combat. It affects the entire family, relationships between loved ones, everyday routines, communication, and mutual understanding.
Coming home from war is an important and long-awaited moment. At the same time, it marks the beginning of a new chapter that is not always easy to adjust to. During time apart, people change — their habits, perspectives, needs, and ways of expressing their feelings evolve. Sometimes, even those closest to each other have to learn how to listen to and understand one another all over again.
That is why, at the PDMSh Recovery Center “Kolo Svitla,” we pay special attention not only to the psychological recovery of veterans but also to supporting their families and loved ones. After all, rebuilding relationships, trust, and a sense of closeness is an equally important part of returning to a fulfilling life.
Together with our partners — the NGOs “Professional Development” and “Trust UA” — we organized the “Reconnecting” program, dedicated to supporting veterans and their spouses and partners.
During the program, we focused on:
- the emotions and needs of each partner;
- trust, mutual understanding, and the ability to truly listen to one another;
- personal boundaries and respect for them;
- conflicts and ways to communicate during moments of tension;
- supporting one another in everyday life.
We respect the privacy of everyone who visits our Center, so this time we cannot share personal testimonials from participants. However, their kind words and positive feedback showed us just how valuable this program was and how relevant the need to rebuild connections between veterans and their loved ones remains.
We plan to continue organizing programs like this in the future. We sincerely thank our partners from the NGOs “Professional Development” and “Trust UA” for their cooperation, professionalism, compassion, and shared commitment to supporting veteran families.
